RAMALLAH, WEST BANK—Several explosions were heard Tuesday in Yasser Arafat’s besieged compound but the Palestinian leader was unharmed by what the Israeli army said was its detonation of unexploded grenades. “No harm has been done to Arafat,” Mohammed Dahlan, a Palestinian security chief, told reporters.

He said Israelis had detonated explosives in an empty prison “literally five meters (yards)” from Arafat’s office. “They are destroying walls inside the compound as a way of eventually getting into Arafat’s office,” Dahlan said.

Israeli officials could not be reached for comment on why they just hadn’t used the door. It is speculated that Israel thought this would be cooler and because Israelis just love to “blow shit up”.
